Serving Tables: The Involvement of the Daughters of God in the Assembly

Today is the eve of something great and wonderful. I am a participant in the increase involvement of our sisters in Christ in the assembly of the saints in Christ. This is not a token, gratuitous or condescension gesture. There may not be the understanding by all as to the solid foundation and roots for this decision, but the decision is definitely not one based on the popular cultural notions of equal rights or cries that this-is-the-new-millennium and it’s about time.

There is definitely a lack of understanding concerning the involvement of the daughters of the kingdom of heaven in the assembly. God poured out his Spirit on his daughters as much as he did on his sons. God did not pour out his Spirit on his sons to keep silent or be silenced anymore than he poured out his Spirit on his daughters to keep silent or to be silenced. God poured out his Spirit on his sons and daughters to prophesy.

There are a few pertinent articles on this subject on my blog. Here on Facebook, I have also extended invitations to various individuals by name to join in the discussion. The degree of understanding has been made evident in those discussions by those who profess to lead, teach and preach. It is no wonder then if the saints in Christ, both men and women, lack understanding, too. The lack of understanding manifests itself in their discomfort merely to see our sisters before the assembly either making announcements, serving communion or reading scripture. These are, relatively speaking, akin to serving tables as the apostles who likened the menial task of attending to the needs of widows who were being neglected in the distribution of food in the congregation. (see Acts 6)

Yet, it is significant that the seeming menial task of serving tables was not regarded as a matter of small importance by the apostles. The requirement which they put to the congregation as they looked for those candidates was that they be of good reputation and full of the Spirit and wisdom. It is also significant that those who were selected for this task of serving tables are noted by the Spirit in the scriptures nor are we familiar with them for their serving of tables. Two of these individuals, Stephen and Philip, are made known to us by the Holy Spirit for their preaching of the gospel. He who has ears, let him hear. Let him who discerns, discern.
